Jesus is walking on water.
Jesus told his disciples to get into a ship and to go ahead of him to the other side while he sent the multitudes away. And when he had sent the multitudes away, he went up a mountain to pray. When the evening came, he was there alone. But the ship was now in the midst of the sea, tossed with waves.
In the quiet hours of the fourth watch, when the world was shrouded in darkness and the only sounds were the gentle lapping of waves against the boat’s hull, something extraordinary happened. The disciples, huddled together on the small fishing vessel, were startled awake by a figure approaching them across the choppy waters. Their hearts pounded in fear as they mistook the silhouette for a ghostly apparition, a spirit risen from the depths of the sea.
The air was thick with uncertainty and dread as they watched this strange sight unfold. Their voices trembled as they voiced their fears, their words echoing eerily over the vast expanse of water. The night was alive with their cries, a haunting melody that seemed to resonate with the very stones beneath the sea.
But then, amidst their terror, a voice cut through the silence. “Be of good cheer,” it said, “it is I; be not afraid.” The words were familiar yet unexpected, spoken with a calmness that seemed to still the stormy sea around them. As the figure drew closer, the disciples recognized Him – Jesus, their master, walking on the water.
Their initial fear gave way to awe as they realized who it was. The man they had followed, the one who had taught them about love and forgiveness, was standing before them, unafraid of the elements. His presence brought a sense of peace, dispelling the fear that had gripped them moments earlier.
As Jesus stepped onto the boat, the disciples fell silent, their eyes wide with wonder. They marveled at His power, at His ability to command the wind and the waves. This moment, so filled with terror just moments ago, now became a testament to faith and courage, a memory etched deeply in their hearts.
From that night forward, the disciples carried with them a newfound confidence, knowing that even in the darkest hours, they could find solace and strength in the presence of Jesus. The encounter on the sea became a symbol of hope, reminding them that nothing was too great for God and that He was always near, ready to speak words of comfort and assurance.
